If you’re looking for a hotel with 10* treatment, stunning views, an incredible buffet, gym, yoga, Ayurveda spa, and private beach whilst keeping in touch with its cultural history, then look no further! We have found the hotel for you.

Sitting on the edge of a cliff overlooking several different scenic landscapes, sits the incredible Leela Kovalam. The Leela Kovalam overlooks the Arabian Sea and is the only hotel in India that is built on a cliff edge!

The day we arrived we were made to feel instantly welcome. We were given fresh coconut water in a coconut, a cute shell necklace and some other bits and pieces. Once the staff had taken our details we were told we were being upgraded to one of their ‘Club’ rooms.

The Club:

This is essentially a hotel within a hotel. The ‘club’ is another building separate from the main hotel, with its own check-in, restaurant, pool, gym, library and more. All of which are exclusive only to the people staying in the club house.

Once we had checked-in and had been shown to our room, our bags were brought up shortly after by two lovely members of staff. We quickly freshened up after our long trip, as we couldn’t wait to start exploring the hotels facilities.

The suites are kept to an incredibly high standard with clean white linen sheets, plumped cushions and a lovely duvet. The club suites include a number of amenities: luxury shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser, shaving kit, dental kit, fresh white robes and slippers! As the club house is situated on the cliff side, the club house has a unique feature which you won’t find anywhere else in India – a suite which overlooks the Arabian Sea!

We were given a tour of the grounds by a lovely staff member called Laxmi, who was as charming as them all, and then some. We were escorted around the grounds in a golf buggy and shown every inch of the hotel, from the private beach that it overlooked to the incredible spa and yoga retreat it had on site.

After the tour, we headed straight to their lunch buffet, where we indulged in all of our favourite Indian curries, breads, salads and desserts. The Leela has a very wide ranging buffet from local Southern and Northern Indian cuisine to continental cuisine, a soup counter with freshly baked bread and artisan pizza freshly baked in a stone oven. What more could you ask for?

We spent the rest of the afternoon waiting for our fully bloated stomachs to go down, before heading back to the spa, where we enjoyed a complimentary 30 minute Yoga session, in a beautiful terrace overlooking the ocean.

The Leela offers complimentary activities to all guests, including yoga, cookery classes, beach volleyball, mocktail classes and treasure hunts. You can also enjoy performances during dinner, whether that be a traditional Kathakali performance (which we enjoyed), fusion dance, flute performance, Kalaripayattu and more! There are also chargeable performances and activities, so do check what is included in your package.

After Yoga, we went to the restaurant/bar in the main hotel to watch some dinnertime entertainment in the form of traditional Kathakali dance and acting. We also went to the Sky bar to redeem the complimentary drink token for Club members, which we received on arrival – we had a refreshing beer!

The next morning we woke up bright and early to make use of their private on site gym for Club members only. This is probably the first time we had worked out in a long time, including before we left for our travels, so it was nice to feel motivated by the beauty of the hotel and the willingness to make use of all the facilities it has to offer.

After the gym we headed straight for breakfast with a view. The breakfast was buffet style, but you could also order from a choice of about 5 dishes to be made for you.

We had a couple of hours left to enjoy the facilities at the hotel before we had to leave to catch our flight to Singapore. So we spent it lounging by the pool and taking some great shots of the fishermen in the sea below, with the drone.

The Palace:

Along with the contemporary suites that The Leela offers to its customers, they also have a royal experience! Within the hotel grounds, you will find a castle which once belonged to the Travancore royal family! The palace is a luxuriously refurbished historical Indian castle-turned hotel.

The palace has four incredibly designed suites. The design incorporates traditional royal heritage with state of the art technology. Each room comes with a personal butler and chef! Upon arrival you are showered with flower petals and walk on the red carpet which leads you to your room!

Each room has a different coloured theme and layout. To match the decor you will also find botanical infused gin! Do check The Leela’s website before booking to make sure you choose the room layout works best for you.

We were fortunate to have the opportunity to take some great pictures of Sheepers in the palace!

If you decide to visit Kovalam, we strongly recommend staying at The Leela Kovalam. The staff members ensure your stay is super relaxing and their hospitality is complimented by the luxurious facilities that are on offer. We could not fault this hotel!

The Leela also have conference rooms and banquet halls available for corporate or wedding hire, do check out their website for further information on the facilities that they have on offer.
