Iceland in November:
When we started planning our trip to Iceland, our initial idea was to road trip around and sleep in a camper/car. We wanted to increase our chances of seeing the Northern Lights by not actually going inside, and also see as much of the island as possible… so never really stop driving.
Soon we realised the complexes that came with renting a car in Iceland.
- We had heard that many people had been scammed by companies and had to pay for damages which they were convinced they didn’t cause. Damages can be quite common in Iceland due to the weather and rocky terrain.
- The £2000+ hold that the companies put on your credit card when you pick up your car.
Neither of us had a limit of over £2000 on our cards, so as you can imagine, this was a big issue. We started to panic and call up multiple car rental places and they were all saying the same thing. By this point it was 2 days before we were leaving for Iceland and we still didn’t have a car.
Happy campers do obviously specialise in camper-vans, but for our budget trip to Iceland itinerary their prices were slightly too steep.
We got on the phone to Guide to Iceland, and their customer service was wonderful. They were extremely helpful and cooperative with us and our situation. They agreed to reduce the hold on our account if we purchase their Premium Insurance package, which for us was a no-brainer.
Guide to Iceland booked our car with BlueCarRental. When arriving at Keflavík airport, there was a super quick and easy shuttle service waiting to pick us up and take us to Blue Car rental offices, which was only a 2 minute drive away.
The man at the desk was very helpful, he explained the rules and regulations of renting the car and driving in Iceland. He took our card and driving licence details, and that was that.
Once the keys were handed over, we were keen to take photos of any small blemishes that the company may have missed before we set off. However, it was dark out, and taking photos wouldn’t be easy. The man at the desk explained that we could take photos the next morning instead. We found this to be very helpful.
The car was a great drive during our trip, it felt safe and reliable, and I would definitely recommend this company if looking to rent a car in Iceland. They are also great for tour packages and day trip itineraries.
